But I wish I could find a game that at least attempted a more natural control setup. And not having tried it, it may be a stupid idea. It's probably too non-intuitive for folks who don't ride though so there's that. But something which uses separate inputs for the two handgrips because that's how motorcycles basically work. It seems like a more natural setup would be to use both analog sticks: push the left one up to turn left, push the right one up to turn right. Pushing one analog stick to turn is so unlike riding an actual motorcycle that I just find it frustrating. The bikes are so fast these days, it more hoping you don't over shoot the hell out of something and plant yourself into the next rhythm. It does not always work out correctly, but I could usually eyeball a double and know about 70% of 2nd gear would get me over it fine. I rode and raced for a long time and like he said, you have that knowledge of generally what it takes to hit something. Not to mention some of them building replicas in their back yard prior to the event. Another thing that separates the two is bike setup, a rider setting up a bike for Supercross will have stiffer suspension and likely gear the bike different as they are expected to come out of a tight turn and hit a triple vs the rougher terrain of an outdoor motocross track would required softer suspension. The cool thing about Supercross is that as a spectator you can watch the entire race from the stands where as motocross, you would need to pop a squat on some part of the track and get glimpse when the riders go by. Outdoor motocross racing has longer tracks, and is more physically demanding. Over the time the tracks have moved indoors (some exceptions), the jumps are bigger the timing is tougher. Although Supercross has evolved into almost a different sporty entirely.

From what I can tell, it seems that Supercross is just the brand name for a specific series of motocross races, hence the capital "S". Off-road motorcycles racing each other on specially constructed tracks doesn't sound like an evolution of motocross, it's the exact same thing. I don't really know much about Supercross, an evolution of motocross in which off-road motorcycles race each other on dirt tracks constructed specially for the occasion.Īfter reading the article, I still don't know much about Supercross. Here's an idea of what these guys are doing every day. Any of them could go out on the first lap of practice and easily jump every obstacle just purely out of experience and muscle memory.

Most of them are professional racers and athletes by 13 or 14 years old and have been logging thousands of hours at testing facilities training for racing. It's hard to overstate the level of intuition and 'feel' these racers have. And there's a practice / qualifying session during the day before the night show. The riders do a press day the day before where they are able to ride the track for a bit and get a feel for layout and rhythms. There are a few 'guidelines' for certain obstacles that the American Motorcyclist Association sets for things like triples, but they're very loosely followed by DirtWurx, the track builders. TV doesn't do the size of everything justice. I went to Daytona Supercross 3 years running, and one of the coolest aspects is walking the track after the night is through.

Monster Energy Supercross 4 has done a great job of replicating this. A rider will fan the clutch on the motorcycle to keep the engine RPMs high when in a turn, then fully release the clutch to give a burst of power to the rear wheels to clear large obstacles. In Supercross racing, utilizing the clutch is a very key component to racing. I also prefer the controls of the game to be as realistic as possible.
